Francophone Libraries: Official Languages Commissioner Agrees with NDP

October 15th, 2013 - 10:29am

OTTAWA — In a preliminary report, the Commissioner of Official Languages strongly criticizes the Conservative government’s irresponsible decision to close the only two Francophone scientific libraries run by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO): one in the Maurice-Lamontagne Institute in Mont-Joli, and another in Moncton.

“The Conservatives have no choice: they must revisit their decision to close our only Francophone scientific libraries,” said Philip Toone, the Official Opposition’s Associate Critic for Fisheries and Oceans and the MP for Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, who filed the complaint on behalf of the NDP.

“Once again, the Conservatives are getting their knuckles rapped for their disrespect toward our official languages,” he added.

The Commissioner not only opposed the government’s decision, but also recommended that DFO consult official language minority communities beforehand, instead of doing so only after being criticized.

“That’s how it always works with the Conservatives: they make decisions without consulting anyone and hope that no one will notice,” said Philip Toone.
